ABOUT BioED 2002
The
recent explosion in the analysis of biological information using computer-based
techniques has led to the evolution of a key science of this century.
This new field, known as Bioinformatics, has excited academics, industrialists
and investors worldwide. The possibility to train this new generation
of scientists is one that we must tackle effectively and efficiently,
if we are to remain relevant to our potential students as well as to
their future employers. Universities should view their participation
in moulding new bioinformaticists not only from the standpoint of filling
a market niche, but as a challenge and an opportunity to make a valuable
contribution to this new domain.
The
S* Life Science Informatics Alliance (www.s-star.org) is organizing
this Symposium on Bioinformatics Education, which is hosted by NUS (Office
of Life Sciences, Bioinformatics Centre, Dept of Biochemistry and Dept
of Biological Sciences) and endorsed by the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics
Network (www.apbionet.org). Experts from the S* member institutions,
industry and overseas universities will address topics ranging from
curriculum development to the latest tools for imparting bioinformatics
knowledge. Additionally, there is a dedicated session for the latest
updates from the Asia-Pacific region.
The
symposium is intended for
-
educators
and students currently involved in running programs in bioinformatics
-
senior
faculty members considering bioinformatics teaching and research
programs
-
all
those with an interest in bioinformatics
