Bioinformatics has greatly accelerated the pace of biological research and development especially in many advance countries where comprehensive bioinformatics programs have already been developed and are being implemented. The Philippines, in order to nurture this area of biotechnology infrastructure, has recently embarked on a bioinformatics development program, under the auspices of the government-owned University of the Philippines (UP) System and with the assistance of the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). This paper discusses this bioinformatics education initiatives as embodied in a work plan for collaborative training and research in bioinformatics. Initial implementation of the work plan includes a graduate level survey course in bioinformatics organized as team teaching course with both face to face and online mode of deliveries across two UP campuses, Diliman and Los Baņos, with the assistance of IRRI and the UP Open University. Special trainings for scholars from the UP and partner institutions will be conducted within the context of bioinformatics projects compatible with the research agenda of each institution. Given the adequate network and online capabilities of the UP Open University and the necessity of bringing Bioinformatics Education to a greater number of people, a proposal to institute a course on bioinformatics by the mode of distance education is now under consideration.
