With the pervasive use of IT in the biomedical sciences, it is inevitable that a working knowledge of bioinformatics is not only confined to university graduates (and post-graduates) but also to those graduating from the polytechnics. Polytechnic graduates trained in the Biotechnology programmes can work in biomedical research labs where their training in bioinformatics (as end users) can add value to research programmes. There is also a possibility that polytechnic graduates trained in IT or Engineering (with basic understanding of molecular biology) can enter the biomedical sciences industry to build/maintain databases, install bioinformatics software, write programmes to enhance software applications and others. To train polytechnic biotechnology graduates in bioinformatics, a number of topics have been carefully selected and taught via lectures, practical sessions on the computer terminals, e-learning as well as a final year graded project with industry and lecturers.
