GUIDELINES FOR THE
FAOBMB TRAVEL FELLOWSHIPS AND YOUNG SCIENTIST AWARDS

 


 

1. Terms of Reference of the FAOBMB Fellowship Committee

(i) To administer any awards to scientists in the FAOBMB region, in accordance with the Standing Rules

     and Standing Orders of the FAOBMB,
(ii) To administer any funds set aside for the purpose of providing fellowships, travel fellowships and / or

      young scientists awards,
(iii) To motivate scientists in the FAOBMB Region, particularly the younger ones, to achieve higher levels

      of accomplishment, and,
(iv) To participate in the selection of suitable candidates to receive FAOBMB travel fellowships, FAOBMB

      Fellowship, and Young Scientist Awards or any other awards under the purview of FAOBMB.
 


2. Objectives of the FAOBMB Travel fellowship and Young Scientist Award.

(i) Award Fellowships to help contribute towards the partial or full travel expenses (discounted economic

    airfare) of a young biochemist or molecular biologist, from the region of a constituent member.
a. attending and presenting a research paper or poster at a FAOBMB sponsored function, or,
b. Spending a period of time in a laboratory within the FAOBMB region, learning a particular technology,

    skill or technique of significance and relevance to the needs of the receiving FAOBMB Constituent

    Member Country/Region.
(ii) Improve research skills and foster the transfer of technology in order to build capacity and capability

     to fulfil the scientific manpower needs of Constituent Member Countries/Regions.
(iii) Develop research linkages between the host and the recipient Constituent Members, and,
(iv) Enhance cooperation and collaboration within the FAOBMB region.


To achieve the above objectives, FAOBMB will allocate funds for awarding:

(a) FAOBMB Travel Fellowships to enable young scientists of not more than 40 years of age to

     attend FAOBMB-sponsored functions,
(b) FAOBMB Fellowships to enable scientists of not more than 40 years from Constituent Member

     Countries/Region to undertake collaborative research or learn particular skills from participating

     laboratories, and,
(c) FAOBMB Young Scientist Awards, one each to a male and a female outstanding biochemist or

     molecular biologist of less than 35 years of age, selected from the FAOBMB member countries or

     regions. The award will be made once every 3 years to coincide with the FAOBMB Congress with

     effect from the 1st of January 2005 and starting with the 2006 Congress in Kyoto, Japan. The

     FAOBMB Young Scientist Awards has been initiated by an endowment of thirty thousand United

     States dollars (US$ 30000.00) provided by Professor Yasuhiro Anraku (FAOBMB President, 1996-

     1998), and can continue to grow from similar donations from like minded individuals. The value of

     each award will be between US$ 1500.00 and US$ 2000.00. The fund shall dissolve upon reaching

     values below US$ 3000.00 and the remaining capital shall be transferred to the FAOBMB Travel

     Fellowship Fund.


Definitions:

1. The age limits detailed in section 11 refer to the age of the applicant at the date of receipt of the

    application by the chairman of the FAOBMB Fellowship Committee.
2. A FAOBMB function is a congress, symposium or workshop sponsored by FAOBMB.
3. A Constituent Member Country/Region is one that has been duly admitted as a member of the

    FAOBMB by the Council of Delegates of the FAOBMB and has not been rejected from membership

    of FAOBMB for any reason whatsoever.


Criteria for the award:

(a) FAOBMB Travel Fellowship
(i) The candidate is at an early stage of his or her career development and has a proven record of

     academic and intellectual achievement and,
(ii) The candidate has completed the prescribed forms truthfully and completely and sent them to the

     Chairman of the Fellowship Committee within the stipulated time, and,
(iii) The candidate shows research potential.

(b) FAOBMB Fellowship:
The above criteria (a) as well as:

(i) The candidate provides evidence of acceptance and partial funding by the collaborating host

     institution and partial/ or funding by the collaborating guest institution/laboratory,
(ii) The candidate provides a detailed plan of training or activity schedule, and,
(iii) The candidate demonstrates relevance and necessity of the particular skill to be acquired and

      explain how he/she will utilize the newly acquired skills in the home country.

(c) FAOBMB Young Scientist Award
The above criteria in (a) as well as:
The candidate shows clear excellence academically and in research accomplishments as evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed journals of international standing. The applicant should be highly recommended and will be expected to make a notable contribution to the FAOBMB Congress or Conferences. The successful recipient of the award shall be invited to present a lecture based on his or her research work at the Congress coinciding with the announcement of the award. The value of the FAOBMB Young Scientist Award will be between US$ 1500.00 and US$ 2000.00. Applications shall be accepted from the applicant or his/her supervisor.
The selection of the candidate for the award shall be the responsibility of the FAOBMB Fellowship Committee with the help of any other nominee deemed appropriate by the President of FAOBMB.

Administration of the FAOBMB travel Fellowship FAOBMB fellowship, and Young Scientist Award.

These awards shall be administered by the FAOBMB Fellowship Committee which shall be responsible for the selection of the candidates, after a proper evaluation of the completed application forms, in accordance with the criteria outlined above. The list of successful awardees is then communicated to the Executive Committee and the Council of Delegates for approval and further action.
 


FAOBMB Fellowship Committee shall comprise the following:

(i) The Chairman, elected by the Council of Delegates
(ii) The FAOBMB Treasurer.
(iii) The Chairman of the Education Committee of FAOBMB
(iv) The Chairman of the organizing committee of the constituent member hosting the FAOBMB Function

      the subsequent year, or his nominee.
(v) A member from the FAOBMB Region co-opted by the Fellowship Committee Chairman.

The tenure of the Chairman shall be for a period of three calendar years from the date of election, following which he or she shall be eligible for re-election. The Term of the Member co-opted under clause (iv) shall be for a period up to the function and shall cease with execution of the function he/she was connected with.
 


Duties of the FAOBMB Fellowship Committee Members

(i) The chairman shall ensure the announcement of the Fellowships and the Young Scientist Awards in

     advance of the FAOBMB Function, invite applications, determine deadlines, communicate with other

     members of the Fellowship Committee, collate and process the evaluation by the Committee Members,

     announce the results of the deliberations and present the results at the Annual Meetings of the

     Executive Committee and the Council.
(ii) Each of the Fellowship Committee Members should evaluate the application forms sent to them

     promptly and relay the outcome to the Chairman without undue delay. (within 14 days of receiving

     the application)
(iii) For the purpose of communication between members of the Fellowship Committee, e-mail messages

     are deemed sufficient. If the communication involves the evaluation of application forms, these have to

     be couriered to the member involved. The result of evaluation may be sent by e-mail or fax or by

     regular/registered mail.
